What makes the perfect putter? It's a question that has fueled endless debates among golfers, but few have explored it with the depth of knowledge and hands-on expertise as Dave Frisch of Goodwood Golf Company. Transforming from golf professional to self-taught CAD designer and master putter craftsman, Dave brings remarkable insights into both the artistic and scientific elements of putter creation. This episode peels back the curtain on the custom putter industry, revealing how these precision instruments are designed, manufactured, and personalized. Dave walks us through his journey of teaching himself computer-aided design and machining, explaining how he transforms blocks of carbon steel and stainless into heirloom-quality putters that perform as beautifully as they look. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Dave shares findings from his ongoing research comparing different putter designs. Using sophisticated tracking technology, he's challenging some of the boldest marketing claims in the industry, particularly those surrounding "zero-torque" putters. His data suggests what many experienced players intuitively know—there's no universal solution in putting, and the best putter is one that complements your natural stroke pattern.Beyond technical details, we explore what makes custom putters so special: personalization. From custom stamping that commemorates meaningful dates or initials to precise specifications tailored to individual stroke characteristics, these aren't just clubs—they're personal instruments that often become treasured possessions passed through generations.Whether you're fascinated by the craftsmanship behind golf equipment, considering investing in a custom putter, or simply love geeking out about golf technology, this conversation offers valuable insights that might forever change how you think about the most personal club in your bag. The divide between golf purists and pragmatists takes center stage in this episode as we explore what truly gives a major championship its identity. Fresh off Scottie Scheffler's commanding PGA Championship victory, we examine not just his dominant performance but the deeper question: should prestigious majors be played on familiar tour stops, or does that diminish their special character? When industry insider Aarik Greenely unexpectedly joins the conversation, the debate intensifies. Drawing from his extensive background in golf, Aarik offers a nuanced perspective on the PGA Championship's place in the major hierarchy—challenging enough to test every aspect of a player's game without crossing into the punitive territory of a US Open. "I don't like watching the best golfers in the world get embarrassed," Greenely asserts, sparking a thoughtful exchange about what makes tournament golf compelling for both players and spectators.Between discussions of Scheffler's potential Grand Slam path and Harry Hall's strong T19 finish, we share the excitement of our community-building ball marker scavenger hunt across Las Vegas. This local initiative has listeners following social media clues to find hidden Ball Markers at unexpected locations—from local golf centers to poke restaurants. The episode closes with an intimate equipment conversation as we reveal our favorite clubs and golf balls, offering both personal insights and practical recommendations for fellow golf enthusiasts.Join us next week when Dave from Goodwood Putters visits to share his expertise on custom putters and the craft behind them.
